Allen's Gallinule is distributed throughout most of Africa south of the Sahara and in much of Madagascar. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in freshwater marshes, reedbeds and flooded grassland.

It is secretive and usually found alone or in pairs. This photo was the best view we had during about 30 minutes of watching.
