The Cape Teal is distributed mainly in southern Africa but with disjunct populations in Ethiopia and Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Chad and Niger. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found mainly on lakes and lagoons with brackish or salty water.
