The Red-billed Teal is distributed throughout much of Africa south of the Sahara excluding West Africa but including Madagascar. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in shallow freshwater lakes, pools and marshes. In Ethiopia it is mainly between 1,800 metres and 2,500 metres.
