The Meller's Duck is endemic to Madagascar where it is found on freshwater lakes, lagoons and marshes in the east of the island. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is classified as Endangered because of its restricted range and its decline due to hunting and habitat loss.

Charles Meller was a botanist who worked in Malawi and Mauritius in the 1860s.
