The Buff-crested Bustard is distributed from the Horn of Africa south through Kenya to Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in arid and semi-arid bushland up to 1,700 metres.

The male, seen here in photo 1 has a pale rufous crown and cheeks, a black throat line and black belly. The female in photo 2 lacks the black throat line and has a mottled crown and barred neck.
