The Brown-faced Go-away bird is almost endemic to Ethiopia where it is found in open woodland and acacia bush. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Some authorities lump it with the Black-faced Go-away-bird C. leopoldi which is distributed further south mainly in Kenya. Birdlife International separates the latter because of its black rather than brown face, the whiter sides to the face, the smaller and darker green breast patch, the lighter breast and belly and a few other characteristics.
