A member of the turaco family, the Western Plantain-eater is distributed in tropical Africa from Senegal to Chad with a disjunct population on the River Congo. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in gallery forest and wooded savanna where it feeds on fruits both wild and cultivated.

Western Grey Plantain-eater, Mole, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image It is a rather dull turaco being mainly grey with a bright yellow bill. In flight it shows a white wing patch.

The specific name of piscator means "fishmonger" and does not appear to have any relevance to this bird.

One vocalisation is a series of high-pitched notes ending in chatter.
