The Brown-backed Woodpecker is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara and north of the Equator from Senegal to Uganda. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in woodland and in savanna with trees.

It is a small woodpecker where the male, pictured here,has a red nape which is lacking on the female.
