The Bar-breasted Firefinch is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara and north of the Equator from Senegal to western Ethiopia. It is found in a variety of open habitats including savanna and wet marshes. It feeds on the ground on grass seeds.

Bar-breasted Firefinch, Brenu-Akyinim, Ghana, May 2011 - click for larger image It has a red bill, a pinkish red face with crown and upperparts brown. Underparts are pinkish red becoming grey on the lower belly and with small white crescents on the sides of the breast and flanks.
