The Bare-eyed Thrush is distributed in southern Ethiopia and Somalia and into Kenya and Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in drier areas than African Thrush T. pelios up to 1,750 metres.

The diamond shaped patch of orange-skin around the eye is diagnostic.
