The number of alternative names indicates a degree of uncertainty about the taxonomy of this species. As Abyssinian Thrush it is distributed from Eritrea through Ethiopia to northern Malawi and northern Zambia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.
It is found in a variety of woodland habitats including gardens. In Ethiopia it is found between 1,650 and 2,500 metres.
