The African Hobby is distributed in tropical Africa where it is found in open woodland, damp savannah and forest edges. It feeds mainly on insects but, in the breeding season, also hunts small birds. It is mainly crepuscular.

A smallish dark falcon, it is slaty-black above with a black moustache on rufous cheeks.
