The Ethiopian Thrush is distributed in the highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It is found in grasslands, moorland and open woodland. It is usually seen on the ground where it searches for insects and grubs.

Formerly regarded as a sub-species of Groundscraper Thrush Psophocichla litsitsirupa simensis it has warmer brown upperparts and a buffy wash on the underparts as well as fairly strong genetic and vocal differences according to the HBW and Birdlife International Checklist.
