European Hornet Vespa crabro
Hornet, Monks Eleigh Garden, Suffolk, England, July 2015 - click for larger image Suffolk, England

The European Hornet is found in Europe and has been introduced elsewhere such as in North America. In Britain it has spread as far north as the Midlands and Wales.

Although larger than most other wasps it is generally less aggressive unless provoked. Indeed it can be the gardener's friend since it is carnivorous and feeds on many garden pests. On the flip side it can also target honey bees.
