The Yellow-browed Tody-Flycatcher is distributed in the Amazon Basin south of the Amazon and Rio Negro and in the adjacent Andean foothills. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the canopy of humid forest and tall secondary growth.

The sub-species found in Ecuador, T. c. guttatum is noted for its white throat and heavier streaks on the throat and breast.
