The White-naped Brush-finch is distributed from southern Mexico to the Andes of Colombia. There is a distribution map at NatureServe.

Some authorities split this species in two with White-naped Brush-finch Atlapetes albinucha (with entirely yellow underparts) restricted to southern Mexico and Yellow-throated Brush Finch A. gutturalis (with whitish breast and underparts) in the rest of the range.

It is found in forest borders and roadside thickets at between 1,500 and 2,200 metres altitude.

The song is sometimes transliterated as o see me, o see, I'm weary, pity me.
