The White-capped Dipper is distributed in the Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is only found near swift-flowing rocky streams and rivers.

It feeds mainly on aquatic invertebrates which it picks up on the margins of the rivers and streams. Unlike all other members of the Dipper family it is not known to plunge into the water to feed.
