The White-bellied Seedeater is distributed in central and eastern Brazil with adjacent areas of Paraguay and Argentina with disjunct populations in north-east Bolivia, at the mouth of the Amazon and in south Surinam.

Male White-bellied Seedeater, Biritiba-Mirim, São Paulo, Brazil, October 2005 - click for larger image It is usually found in more open, grassy areas with scattered bushes and often close to water. It is mainly solitary or in pairs.

In the male the bill is pinky-yellow, the upperparts are grey while the underparts are white. It also has a white speculum which is not always visible.
