The Velvet-purple Coronet is distributed on the Pacific slope of the Andes in south-west Colombia and north-west Ecuador. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in forest and at forest edges mainly between 800 and 2,000 metres.

Velvet-purple Coronet, Amagusa Reserve, Pichincha, Ecuador, November 2019 - click for larger image It has a short, straight bill with black head, neck and throat. Upperparts are shining bluish-green while the breast and belly are glittering purple.
