Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil October 2022 The Tropeiro Seedeater breeds in the Araucaria forests of southern Brazil and migrates northwards to the cerrado of eastern central Brazil during the austral winter. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is classified as Vulnerable because of its small breeding range and its vulnerability to capture for the caged bird trade. |

It was only described as recently as 2013 having previously been regarded as a yellow-billed variant of Plumbeous Seedeater S. plumbea. Apart from the bill colour, its plumage is bluish-grey rather than plumbeous grey, it is larger, lives in a different habitat and has slightly different vocalisations. | |||
