The Tricoloured Heron is distributed in south and east USA, both coasts of Central America, the West Indies, down the Pacific Coast of South America to northern Peru and along the Caribbean coasts of Colombia and Venezuela and as far as north-east Brazil. It is generally found near the coast.

It is slate blue with a white belly and rump. There is a narrow white and maroon line down the foreneck. The white plumes on the back of the neck (occipital plumes) on the first photo indicate that the bird is in breeding plumage.
