Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea)

The Little Blue Heron is found from Massachusetts and the Gulf of California to Peru and southern Brazil.

It is found both inland in lakes, marshes and freshwater pools and near the coast in brackish water and mangrove swamps.

Little Blue Heron, Cayo Coco, Cuba, February 2005 - click for larger image It is bluish-grey in colour with a deep maroon-brown neck. The bill is pale blue with ablack tip. Immatures, such as the bird in photo 4, are all white.
