Tawny Piculet (Picumnus fulvescens)

The Tawny Piculet is endemic to a very small area of north-east Brazil. It is known from only about 10 sites in north-east Brazil. It is classified as Vulnerable by Birdlife International.

Female Tawny Piculet, Murici, Alagoas, Brazil, March 2004 - click for larger image It is found in deciduous and semi-deciduous forest as well as forest edges and secondary growth.

The female, shown here, has rich tawny-brown underparts with hints of pale streaks on the breast. Upperparts are brown while the crown is black with white spots. The brown ear-coverts are well shown in the first photo. The male is similar but with red on the forecrown.
