The Sulphur-throated Finch is distributed in south-west Ecuador and north-west Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in desert scrub below 300 metres.

It is very plain and the sulphur throat is not readily visible. It has a distinctive bull-headed appearance with a heavy bill and a short tail.
