The Streaked Saltator is distributed from Costa Rica through Panama to Colombia and eastwards through Venezuela to Trinidad and southwards through Ecuador to Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. In Peru and Ecuador it is found in dry forest and scrub but elsewhere at forest edges and in secondary growth. Mostly found below 1,500 metres.

The sub-species shown here S. s. peruvianus is more heavily streaked below with little or no supercilium and more black on the bill.
