The Star-throated Antwren is endemic to south-east Brazil where it is found close to the ground and often near streams and ravines. See the distribution map at xeno-canto.

It is brown above with a grey face, two buffy wing bars and a black throat with white spots. Underparts are grey. The female has larger white spots and a brown rather than grey forehead.

It used to be classified in the genus Myrmotherula but genetic data places it in Rhopias.
