Spot-winged Pigeon, Barra do Quaraí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image The Spot-winged Pigeon is distributed from central Peru to south-east Brazil and south to central Argentina. It is found in dry semi-open habitat such as the espinilho near Barra do Quaraí in Rio Grande do Sul and in agricultural land.

Its most distinguishing feature is the spotted effect on the wing-coverts.

Spot-winged Pigeon, Barra do Quaraí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image The sub-species C. m. albipennis found in Peru and Bolivia has less noticeable spotting and a conspicuous white band across the wing. It has recently appeared in northern Chile where photos 4 and 5 were taken.

It feeds mainly on seeds and is regarded as a pest in Argentina where it attacks sunflower crops.
