Spot-flanked Gallinule (Gallinula melanops)
Spot-flanked Gallinule, near Uruguaiana, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image The Spot-flanked Gallinule is distributed from eastern and southern Brazil to Bolivia and south into Argentina and Chile. There is a disjunct population near Bogota, Colombia.

It is usually quite conspicuous in wetlands with lots of floating vegetation.

Spot-flanked Gallinule, Taim, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image It has a black face, grey head, neck and breast with a brownish back, large white spots on the flank and conspicuous white undertail-coverts. Its bill and shield are greenish-yellow.
