South American Snipe (Gallinago paraguaiae)
South American Snipe, near Uruguaiana, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image The South American Snipe is distributed throughout most of South America. That said, the taxonomy seems a bit confused and this species is split by some authorities. It has even been considered a sub-species of the Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago to which it bears a lot of similarities.

South American Snipe, Torres del Paine, Chile, December 2005 - click for larger image The first photo was taken near Uruguaiana, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and shows the nominate sub-species. The other photos were taken at Torres del Paine, Chile and show the sub-species G. p. magellanica.
