Snowy-crowned Tern (Sterna trudeaui)

Snowy-crowned Tern, Cassino, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image The Snowy-crowned Tern is distributed round the southern part of South America from south-east Brazil round to Chile. It breeds both inland and near the coast in marshland.

The head and neck are white and there is a black band running from behind the eye to just in front of the eye.

Snowy-crowned Tern with Brown-hooded Gull, Cassino, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image In breeding plumage, seen here in photos 4 and 5, the bill is yellow with a black sub-terminal band while in non-breeding plumage (photos 1, 2 and 3) the bill tends to be black with a yellow tip and varying amounts of dark red near the base. Legs are orange to red.
