The Short-tailed Swift is found in the Amazonian and Orinoco Basins, coastal Ecuador and Peru, Panama and areas of Colombia and a few islands in the southern West Indies. It is mainly a bird of the lowlands.

It has a very short square tail that is pale greyish-brown. Its wings look proportionately long compared to the tail and the bulging mid-wing narrows at the body.
