The Short-billed Miner is distributed on the Patagonian foothills of the Andes in Argentina and in Tierra del Fuego. It is found in grasslands and coastal scrub.

At rest, the primary projection is considerably longer than that of Common Miner and is about twice the length of the bill. Otherwise there are few distinguishing features apart from indistinct streaking on the breast.

It feeds on the ground on insects and seeds.
