The Shining Sunbeam is distributed in the Andes from Colombia through Ecuador to Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in semi-arid páramo and cloud forest at between 2,500 and 3,400 metres.

Shining Sunbeam, Yanacocha Reserve, Ecuador, November 2019 - click for larger image It is characterised by its short bill, brown upperparts and coppery-rufous underparts. The male's rump is shiny purple, copper and green but this is more subdued in the female.
