Sharpe's Wren is distributed in the Andes from Colombia, through Ecuador to the north of Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the undergrowth of mossy forest and cloud forest including forest edges mainly between 1,500 and 3,100 metres.

It is overall dull rufous-brown with narrow barring on the wings and tail.
