The Rufous-vented Whitetip is distributed on the eastern slope of the Andes from southern Colombia through Ecuador to northern Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the mid to low strata of humid forest and forest edges but can be difficult to see although they occasionally come to feeders.

It is the eastern equivalent of the Purple-bibbed Whitetip U. benjamini found on the western slope of the Andes.
