The Rufous-tailed Foliage-gleaner is distributed in a wide arc around the Amazon and Orinoco Basins. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the canopy and mid-levels of terra firme forest unlike the very similar and more common Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner which is much less arboreal in habits.

Another distinguishing feature of the Rufous-tailed Foliage-gleaner is the dull mottling on the breast which is absent on the Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner.
