The Rufous-chested Tanager is distributed in the Andes from southern Colombia through Ecuador and into Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in shrubby forest borders and woodland including Polylepis mainly between 1,600 and 3,000 metres.

It has an orange-rufous head, breast and flanks with a grey back and pale belly.
