The Red-faced Spinetail is distributed from Costa Rica through Panama to the central and western Andes of Colombia and Ecuador. See the distribution map at NatureServe. It is found in the canopy and borders of montane forest mainly from 700 to 1,600 metres.

It is rufous on the crown, face, wings and tail. Otherwise it is dull brown with a whitish throat.

The song is high-pitched and chattering.
