The Red-and-green Macaw is very similar to the slightly smaller Scarlet Macaw Ara macao. The main differences are that the Scarlet Macaw has yellow on the on the wing coverts and the Red-and-green Macaw has lines of small red feathers on its bare facial skin.

Red-and-green Macaw, Cristalino, Mato Grosso, Brazil, April 2003 - click for larger image They are to be found in the humid evergreen forest of the Orinoco and Amazon Basins although they can be found in savannahs where there is gallery woodland.

They feed on a variety of seeds and fruits and nest either in holes in trees (as in photo 3) or in holes in cliffs.
