The Pileated Parrot is distributed in south-east Brazil and adjacent areas of Argentina and Paraguay. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in Atlantic Rain Forest up to about 1,500 metres.

It is noted for its red cap. It feeds on seeds and fruits and nests in holes in trees.
