The Ornate Tinamou is distributed in the Andes of central and southern Peru, western Bolivia, north-western Argentina and northern Chile. It is found on grasslands at between 2500 and 4800 metres.

Ornate Tinamou, Putre, Chile, February 2007 - click for larger image It has a dark brown crown which is often raised, a darkish line through the eye and dark spots on the head and neck. The grey breast and buffy belly are unspotted. Upperparts are barred and streaked while the flanks and undertail are distinctly barred.
