Woodcreeper Sittasomus griseicapillus Brazilian name: Arapaçu-verde |
||||
| Brazil
The Olivaceous Woodcreeper is distributed from Mexico through Central America and into most of tropical and sub-tropical South America. It is found in a wide variety of wooded habitat from humid forest to caatinga and cerrado. Most authorities seem to agree that this species should be split into 3 or 4 separate species but somebody needs to revise the taxonomy properly before such a split can take place. There are five main groups of sub-species: the griseicapillus group in Amazonia and the chaco; the aequatorialis group on the Pacific coast of South America; the griseus group in Central America and adjacent South America; the reiseri group of north-east Brazil; and the sylviellus group of eastern and south-eastern South America. |

| All these photos were taken
in eastern Brazil so belong to the sylviellus
group. Photo 2 shows a bird of the nominate sub-species
on the underside of a branch looking less yellow and duller than
the bird in photo 3 S. g. sylviellus .
There are recordings on xeno-canto, a distribution map from NatureServe and additional information available via Avibase. |
