The Mountain Parakeet is distributed patchily in Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and adjacent north-west Argentina and central Chile and adjacent western Argentina.

Mountain  Parakeet, Putre, Chile, February 2007 - click for larger image It is normally found at fairly high elevations and Chilean populations are at between 2,000 and 3,800 metres. It is often near cliffs in shrubby areas or puna grasslands.

It is a very small parrot about the size of a budgerigar with green upperparts and varying amounts of yelloe below depending on the sub-species. The bill is usually yellow in the male and greyish in the female. The primaries are blue.
