Magellanic Snipe (Gallinago magellanica)
(aka South American Snipe)
South American Snipe, Torres del Paine, Chile, December 2005 - click for larger image The Magellanic Snipe is distributed in Central and southern Chile and southern Argentina. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. The taxonomy has been a bit confused and this species was lumped by some authorities with Pantanal Snipe P. paraguaiae as South American Snipe. It has even been considered a sub-species of the Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago to which it bears a lot of similarities.
