The Lesser Yellowlegs breeds in northern USA and Canada but migrates during the northern winter to southern USA, Central America, the West Indies and South America. See the distribution map at xeno-canto.

San Jose, Lambayeque, Peru, October 2018 - click for larger image They leave their breeding grounds from early July to October and begin to arrive in South America towards the end of August. They return northwards from late March until May.

It has long yellow to orange legs and a relatively short bill when compared to Greater Yellowlegs Tringa melanoleuca .
