Greater Yellowlegs, Cayo Coco, Cuba, February 2005 - click on image for a larger view The Greater Yellowlegs breeds in northern USA and Canada but migrates during the northern winter to southern USA, Central America, the West Indies and South America. They arrive in their wintering grounds around August and leave around March / April. Photos 1 to 3 were taken in Cuba in February while photo 4 was taken in Chile in November.
Greater Yellowlegs, Cayo Coco, Cuba, February 2005 - click on image for a larger view These photos show the bird in non-breeding plumage when it is mottled grey-brown above and white below with streaks on the throat and chest. The bill is long at about 1½ times the head and can be slightly upturned in some birds. The legs are yellow with a big, knobbly "knee".
