Greater Yellowlegs Tringa
melanoleuca
|
 |
The Greater Yellowlegs breeds
in northern USA and Canada but migrates during the northern
winter to southern USA, Central America, the West Indies and
South America. They arrive in their wintering grounds around
August and leave around March / April. Photos 1 to 3 were taken
in Cuba in February while photo 4 was taken in Chile in
November. |
 |
These photos show the bird in
non-breeding plumage when it is mottled grey-brown above and
white below with streaks on the throat and chest. The bill is
long at about 1½ times the head and can be slightly
upturned in some birds. The legs are yellow with a big, knobbly
"knee". |
