The Least Pygmy Owl is distributed in south-east Brazil and eastern Paraguay. It is found in the canopy and at the edges of Atlantic Rain Forest.

It is very small and the second photo just shows the black eye-spots on the back of the neck which can give a possible predator the impression that the bird is looking at it.

It hunts for its prey of insects, lizards and small birds by perching and then pouncing. It is active during both day and night.
