Lafresnaye's Piculet is distributed in south-east Colombia, eastern Ecuador and northern Peru with a disjunct population along the Amazon in north-central Brazil. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the canopy of lowland forest and in foothills up to 1,400 metres.
