The Bar-breasted Piculet is distributed in Amazonian Brazil south of the river Amazon and in adjacent areas of Peru and Bolivia. It is found mainly on the edges and in clearings of the rain forest.

Significant features are the pale yellow underparts with brownish bars on the breast and brownish streaks on the belly. The head is black with white spots except on the forecrown of the male, seen in this photo, where the spots are yellow giving rise to its specific name. The female has only white spots on her black head.

There are recordings and a distribution map on xeno-canto.
