The Grey-flanked Cinclodes is distributed in Chile from Antofagasta southwards and in adjacent areas of Argentina. It breeds near streams in the Andes but spends the Austral winter lower down.

The centre of the belly is white or pale grey and the rear flanks have a brownish tinge. The white throat contrasts with the greyish breast with white streaks. Wing linings are white which can show at the bend of the wing on a perched bird.
